Evolution of Birthstones:

The origin of the belief that a special stone was devoted to every month, and that the stone of the month owned a particular virtue or “cure” that it could convey to those born in that month, dates back at least the first century.  There is conjecture that the twelve stone in the great breastplate of the Jewish High Priest may have had a little bearing on this evolution.  In the eighth and ninth centuries, the interpreters of Revelation started to put down to each of these stone attributes of the twelve apostles.  The Hindus conversely had theire own interpretation.
